Traditionally worn as a talisman against evil spirits, it became known in the Edo period as the “color of beginnings,” used in weddings and Girls’ Day celebrations. The color expresses hope through beauty and human feeling. Cranes are among the premier symbols longevity and good fortune. They are closely associated with the New Year and with marriage ceremonies. Auspicious clouds appear as heavenly waters, the source of life-giving rain, representing peace and fortune. The checkerboard pattern symbolizes good fortune through the growth of business, reputation, and family.
