Behind the Scenes: Creating Casa de Fuji
A look at the creative process behind Casa de Fuji, from initial sketches to finished watercolor.
The Story Behind Casa de Fuji
This piece began as a small sketch in my notebook during a quiet afternoon. The image of a traditional Japanese house with Mount Fuji in the background kept returning to me.
Initial Sketches
I started with pencil studies, working out the composition. The challenge was balancing the intimate scale of the house against the grandeur of the mountain.
Color Studies
Before committing to the final piece, I created several small color studies:
- Study 1: Warm palette with sunset tones
- Study 2: Cool blues and grays for a misty morning feel
- Study 3: The final direction - a balanced palette that evokes serenity
The Final Piece
The finished work took several sessions to complete. Each layer of watercolor needed to dry completely before the next could be applied. The architectural details of the house required careful brushwork with a fine-tipped brush.
This piece is part of the Oriental collection and represents my ongoing fascination with Japanese aesthetics.
