Learning Watercolor: My Journey So Far
Sharing lessons learned from years of watercolor painting, with tips for beginners.
Reflections on the Watercolor Medium
Watercolor has been my primary medium for the past few years, and I wanted to share some reflections on what I’ve learned along the way.
Why Watercolor?
The transparency and unpredictability of watercolor drew me in. Unlike acrylics or oils, you can’t easily cover mistakes. Every brushstroke matters, and the medium teaches you to be decisive.
Key Lessons
- Work light to dark - Always start with your lightest values
- Preserve your whites - The white of the paper is your brightest highlight
- Embrace happy accidents - Some of the best effects come from letting the water do its thing
- Quality materials matter - Good paper makes more difference than good paint
Recommended Resources
For anyone starting their watercolor journey, I recommend practicing basic washes before attempting complex subjects. Spend time understanding how water behaves on different papers.
