Working with Gold Leaf: Techniques and Tips
A guide to gold leaf application techniques for artists, from materials to finished piece.
Gold Leaf for Beginners
Gold leaf is one of the most rewarding materials to work with, but it can be intimidating at first. Here are some techniques I’ve developed over years of practice.
Materials You’ll Need
- Gold leaf sheets - I recommend starting with imitation gold leaf before moving to genuine
- Sizing adhesive - Water-based sizing is easier to control
- Soft brushes - A gilder’s tip and a soft mop brush
- Burnishing tool - An agate burnisher works best
Step-by-Step Process
First, prepare your surface. The paper or canvas must be completely dry and free of dust. Apply a thin, even coat of sizing and wait until it reaches the right tack.
The key to successful gold leaf application is patience. Rush the sizing and you’ll get wrinkles. Wait too long and it won’t adhere.
Common Mistakes
- Applying leaf to wet sizing
- Using too much adhesive
- Not sealing the finished surface
Practice on scrap paper before committing to a final piece. The results are worth the effort.
